Who we are
We the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood, CPS (the abbreviation CPS stands for Congregatio Pretiosi Sanguinis in Latin), are an international congregation of women, founded by a Trappist Abbot Francis Pfanner in Marianhill, near Durban, South Africa, on the 8th of September 1885.
With the title Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood, our founder wanted us totally committed to the service of Christ`s redeeming love, to make the Precious Blood of Christ fruitful for all (Const.102).Our name is our mandate: to live the Paschal Mystery and to witness to the redeeming love of Christ.
Our life-which is mission itself- gives glory to God.
(From simple beginnings in South Africa.)
Mission to and among people and readiness to be sent wherever the need is greatest are essential elements of our life and spirit. Our legacy received from Abbot Francis Pfanner is imbued with the Benedictine spirit. This contemplative missionary heritage of our Founder inspires us CPS worldwide to commit ourselves to fulfill our religious and missionary calling of ora et labora, pray and work. The challenges of today speak to the heart of this our double vocation and call us beyond the familiar to new ways of being and witnessing in the world and for the world. It also means to stand with Mary under the cross in ready attentiveness to God`s word. From simple beginnings in South Africa.
Our Spirituality
Four Virtues
“We are called to live the Paschal Mystery and to witness to the redeeming love of Christ”. (Const.102)
Thus, the redeeming love of Jesus is the basic inspiration of our double vocation as missionary and as religious, the missionary service and the life of prayer of every Missionary Sister of the Precious Blood.
“Our name is also our mandate: to honour in a special way the Blood of Christ, through which he redeemed all people. God makes the Blood of Christ fruitful through our apostolates.”(Const.102)
We live our spirituality through our charism, which gives our congregation its identity.
Our inner spirit
Our Inner Spirit was written by our Co-foundress Mother Paula Emunds and completed in 1908.In her writing she assimilated the spirituality and thoughts of our founder, Abbot Francis Pfanner.
Three principles
God is my father and I am his child
Ora et labora (pray and work)
Unity is strength
Three devotions
Devotion to the Precious Blood
Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Devotion to Mary, the Mother of God
Four virtues
Perfect surrender to the will of God
Incessant worship of God
Generosity and readiness for sacrifice
Faithfulness in little things
“Our mission is the kingdom of God and that has no boundaries”
Purpose of our life
..To give glory to God in total surrender through our profession. We are called to live the Paschal Mystery and to witness to the redeeming love of Christ (Const.104, 102)
Goal of our Missionary Service
To bring the Good News that God became human in Jesus who redeemed the whole world with his Precious Blood. (Const.502)
Wherever we are, we gladly spend ourselves so that Christ's love can permeate all those areas in society and culture, which hinder the growth of the kingdom of God and disregard respect for human dignity. We strive to be a prophetic sign against the false values of society. (Const.503)
We actively promote a culture that respects life. In all our ministries especially to the poor, the vulnerable and the marginalized, we continue the compassionate love of the healing Christ (Const.506)
We offer our pastoral and social services to all people irrespective of religion, race, nationality or social standing. (Const.504) According to the wish of our Founder, we focus on the family apostolate and the holistic education of children and youth. We support women in their needs and difficulties and act with them against all forms of oppression to promote their dignity. (Const.505)
